Joshimath
Joshimath, also known as Jyotirmath, is a highly revered town in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, situated at an altitude of about 1,890 meters above sea level. Nestled between the Alakananda and Dhauliganga rivers, Joshimath is one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers of Kedar Khand.
Founded by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, Joshimath is one of the four sacred Maths (monastic centers) established to revive Sanatan Dharma. It serves as the winter seat of Lord Badrinath, where the deity is worshipped when the Badrinath Temple remains closed due to heavy snowfall.
Joshimath is also a major pilgrimage hub, acting as the base town for sacred journeys to Badrinath Dham, Hemkund Sahib, Valley of Flowers, Auli, Tapovan, and Niti–Mana villages. Spiritually rich yet naturally beautiful, the town blends ancient wisdom with breathtaking Himalayan landscapes.
Beyond religion, Joshimath is known for its strategic and cultural importance, serene monasteries, ancient temples, and panoramic views of snow-clad peaks. It is a place where faith, history, and nature come together, making it a must-visit destination for pilgrims, trekkers, and seekers alike.
